Safety and Environmental Impact Analysis of Biocidal Products: What You Need to Know

What is a Biocidal Product?

Biocidal products include insecticides, disinfectants, preservatives and other pest control products. Their areas of use are quite wide and can be categorized as follows:

  • Disinfectants: Used to kill or inhibit the growth of microorganisms.
  • Pest Control Products: Target insects, rodents and other harmful organisms.
  • Preservatives: Used to prevent materials from deteriorating or being damaged by microorganisms.
  • Other Products: Developed for specific applications such as wood protection products, surface coating agents and water disinfection products.

Safety Analysis of Biocidal Products

For the safe use of biocidal products, a series of analyses are carried out to assess their impact on both human health and the environment.

1. Toxicological Analyses

  • Skin and Eye Irritation: Evaluates whether the product causes skin and eye irritation.
  • Acute Toxicity Test: Measures how toxic the product is in short-term exposure.
  • Effects on the Respiratory System: Tests whether the product has harmful effects when inhaled.

2. Microbiological Activity Tests: Measures how effective the product is against microorganisms. Efficacy against bacteria, viruses, fungi and other harmful organisms is evaluated.

3. Stability Tests: Evaluates the chemical and biological stability of the product under certain conditions (heat, humidity, light).

4. User Safety Tests: It is done to measure whether there is any health risk during users' contact with the product.

Environmental Impact Analysis of Biocidal Products

The environmental impact of biocidal products is assessed in terms of the risks they pose when released into the environment. The purpose of environmental analysis is to minimize the harm of these products on natural ecosystems.

1. Ecotoxicity Tests

  • Aquatic Ecotoxicity: Measures the effects of the product on aquatic organisms (fish, algae, crustaceans).
  • Soil Organisms: Assesses the effects of the product on microorganisms and earthworms when mixed with soil.

2. Biodegradability Analysis:

Measures how long the product can persist in nature and its degradation time. Products that persist in the environment pose a greater risk to the ecosystem.

3. Chemical Release Tests: Analyzes which chemicals the product releases when released into the environment.

4. Water Pollution Tests: Analyzes how biocidal products affect the quality of water and whether they harm the aquatic ecosystem when they enter water resources.
