REACH - RoHS
The REACH and RoHS regulations introduced by the European Union aim to protect both human health and the environment by controlling the chemicals used in products. Accordingly, it is mandatory for manufacturers and importers to certify that their products comply with legal requirements through REACH - RoHS tests.
What is REACH?
REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) is the European Union regulation governing the production and use of chemicals. Under REACH;
- The use of chemicals harmful to human health and the environment is limited or prohibited.
- Tests whether the chemicals on the SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern) list in the products are more than 0.1%.
- Particularly textiles, plastics, electronics, toys, footwear and cosmetics are subject to these tests.
What is RoHS?
RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) is a European Union directive that restricts hazardous substances used in electronic and electrical equipment. The main substances restricted under RoHS are:
- Lead (Pb)
- Cadmium (Cd)
- mercury (Hg)
- Chrome VI
- Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
- Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)
- Phthalates such as DEHP, BBP, DBP, DIBP
RoHS testing certifies that devices are environmentally safe and recyclable.
Why You Should Test for REACH and RoHS
Pre-Export Compliance: Companies that will sell to EU countries are required to certify REACH and RoHS compliance in their products.
- Meeting Legal Obligations: Otherwise, products may be refused at customs or withdrawn from the market.
- Brand Trust and Consumer Health: Safe products increase customer satisfaction and enhance brand equity.
- Environmental Sustainability: RoHS and REACH regulations promote environmentally friendly production processes.
What is the RoHS Directive?
RoHS is a European directive that restricts the use of 10 specific substances in the EEE of all products manufactured and sold within the European Union.
What is the REACH Regulation?
REACH is a European regulation that restricts the use of certain chemical substances in all products or components manufactured and sold within the European Union.
The use of a total of 224 chemical substances in all products and materials is restricted under REACH. Chemicals restricted under the REACH regulation are restricted regardless of whether they are used on their own, in a mixture or in an article.
There are 10 substances restricted above certain concentrations under the RoHS. Restricted substances and limits are as follows.
- Cadmium (Cd): < 100 ppm
- Lead (Pb): < 1000 ppm
- Mercury (Hg): < 1000 ppm
- Hexavalent chromium: (Cr VI) < 1000 ppm
- Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB): 1000 ppm
- Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE): < 1000 ppm
- Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP): < 1000 ppm
- Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP): 1000 ppm
- Dibutyl phthalate (DBP): 1000 ppm
- Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP): < 1000 ppm
