Food Supplement Analysis

What is a Food Supplement?

Today, nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, proteins and carbohydrates that should be taken daily are deficient due to the change in eating habits, people's increased participation in the workforce and increased stress. The lack of nutrients is felt as weakness and fatigue during the day. This situation leads people to supplementary foods to feel more energetic during the day.

Supplementary Foods, within the scope of the "Regulation on the Import, Production, Processing and Marketing of Supplementary Foods", are defined as "Plants that contain nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, fatty acids, amino acids or nutritional elements such as vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, fatty acids, amino acids or plants with nutritional or physiological effects other than these in order to supplement normal nutrition, products that are prepared in capsules, tablets, lozenges, disposable powder packets, liquid ampoules, dropper bottles and other similar liquid or powder forms of concentrates or extracts of plant and animal-derived substances, bioactive substances and similar substances alone or in mixtures and whose daily intake dose is determined".

With the easy accessibility of dietary supplements and their increasing place in our lives, there is an increase in counterfeiting and adulteration. In order to prevent this situation, the procedures and principles regarding the import, production, processing and placing on the market of food supplements have been determined with the regulations published. The most important point in the quality control of fortified foods is the analysis stages, which are important both in terms of the suitability of the products to be offered for sale and in terms of controlling the accuracy of the information shared with consumers.
