Total Migration Testing

What is Total Migration?

Total migration refers to the total amount of chemicals that migrate into the food product under temperature, humidity or other environmental conditions of the packaging material. These substances are chemicals that originate from the components of the packaging and can potentially cause health problems when in contact with food. Testing is essential to determine whether food packaging is safe because some substances can harm human health, have carcinogenic effects or disrupt hormones. Total migration testing is therefore carried out to ensure that the materials used in food packaging comply with legal regulations.

What is the Migration Test?

Migration tests are analyses performed on food contact, packaging, kitchen materials and food production machines to determine the risk of migration of toxicological risk substances in their structure to food.

Factors affecting migration analysis are as follows:

  • Structure of food
  • Contact time
  • Contact temperature
  • The structure of the packaging and the amount of material used in its content

Total migration is expressed as the sum of all substances that can migrate from food contact materials into food.

Published by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry; Testing procedures are carried out on packaging materials within the scope of the "Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on the List of Food Analogues Used in Migration Testing of Components of Plastic Materials and Materials in Contact with Food".

Objectives of the Total Migration Test

  1. Ensuring Food Safety: To verify that the materials used in food packaging and chemicals in contact with food are at a safe level.
  2. Ensuring Legal Compliance: To comply with national and international regulations, such as the European Union's EU No 10/2011 regulation or FDA regulations.
  3. Protecting Consumer Health: Ensuring that chemicals in food packaging do not harm food products.
  4. Controlling the Quality of Production Processes: To control the quality and safety of materials used in packaging production processes.

Food simulations used in migration analysis are as follows:

Simulant A Aqueous Food, 10% Ethyl Alcohol
Simulant B Acidic Food, 3% Acetic Acid
Simulant C Alcoholic Food, 20% Ethyl Alcohol
Simulant D1 Fatty Food, 50% Ethyl Alcohol
Simulant D2 Fatty Food, Vegetable Oil
Simulant E Dry Food, Poly(2,6-diphenyl-p-phenylene oxide)

In our laboratories serving in many parts of Turkey, "Total Migration Analyses" are performed on packaging materials in accordance with legal regulations and standards related to TURKAK accreditation.
