Environmental Impacts of Waste Oils

Improper management of waste oils can have negative impacts on the environment. For example, domestic and industrial waste oils can cause water pollution and cause major disruptions to aquatic ecosystems. It can also accumulate in soil and reduce the productivity of agricultural land. Therefore, managing and treating waste oils in an environmentally friendly way plays a critical role in protecting ecosystems. Leaching of waste oils, especially petroleum-derived oils, can cause soil and water pollution. This pollution can reduce the oxygen level of the water and hinder the survival of aquatic life. Furthermore, these oils damage vegetation, threatening biodiversity in the ecosystem.


Importance of Waste Oil Analysis

Waste oil analysis is an important step for environmental protection and healthy living. These analyzes are carried out to determine the quality of waste oils, the chemicals they contain and potential risks. Analyzing waste oils ensures proper management of these wastes and minimizes the environmental impact by eliminating potential hazards.

Main Objectives of Waste Oil Analysis:
  • Identification of Oil Types: Different types of oils (vegetable, animal, mineral oils, etc.) have different properties. Waste oil analysis helps to decide which treatment methods to use by determining the types of these oils.
  • Detection of Chemical Components: Waste oils, especially in industrial uses, may contain harmful chemicals and pollutants. Analyses allow these contaminants to be detected and necessary measures to be taken to treat these contaminants.
  • Oil Quantification: Accurately quantifying waste oils plays a critical role in determining the materials and methods to be used in the treatment process.
  • Assessment of Environmental Risks: Pollutants contained in waste oils can harm the environment. Analyses assess these risks and provide information on how to treat and dispose of hazardous waste.

Waste oil analyzes carried out within the scope of the "Regulation on Control of Waste Oils" are mandatory procedures to be implemented in order to keep the waste oils of all industrial organizations under control in a way that will not harm the environment.

It is necessary to ensure the temporary storage, transportation and disposal conditions of waste oils without harming the environment and human health. It is determined whether waste oils can be recovered or disposed of with the test procedures carried out in accordance with the "Regulation on the Control of Waste Oils".
