What is Hydrogen Peroxide?

Hydrogen peroxide, commonly called oxygenated water, is known as the simplest peroxide used in disinfectants. Hydrogen peroxide is an environmentally friendly oxidizing agent used in processes such as sterilization. It can be easily used in appropriate concentrations in daily cleaning processes.

Hydrogen peroxide is widely used as a biocide, especially in applications where its decomposition into non-toxic by-products is important.

What are the Application Areas?

Oxidizing agents, especially hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), are increasingly used in a range of medical, food and industrial applications, as well as in environmental applications such as water treatment. In the medical field, oxidizing agents are particularly useful for hard surface disinfection and high-level disinfection of medical devices.

Their main advantages are their broad-spectrum activity, including activity against bacterial endospores, the fact that they do not cause environmental toxicity, and that their surface corrosiveness and odor are greatly reduced with different formulations.

The product types in which hydrogen peroxide can be used are specified as follows in Annex A - List of Substances with Defined Product Type within the scope of the “Biocidal Products Regulation”.

  • Product Type 1: Human hygiene
  • Product Type 2: Disinfectants and algicides not intended for direct application to humans or animals
  • Product Type 3: Animal hygiene
  • Product Type 4: Food and feed area
  • Product type 5: Drinking water
  • Product Type 6: Protect products during storage
  • Product Type 11: Protectors for liquid coolant and processing systems
  • Product Type 12: Slimicides


Efficacy Evaluation of Hydrogen Peroxide

Cellular Oxidation:

  • Hydrogen peroxide oxidizes the cell membranes of microorganisms into harmful compounds, leading to their death.
  • Its activity is directly related to concentration and contact time.


Bactericidal and Fungicidal Activity
:

  • At high concentrations, hydrogen peroxide is effective against gram positive and gram negative bacteria and fungi.
  • It also has virucidal activity, especially on pathogens such as hepatitis B and HIV.


What are the Methods of Analysis?

  • Titration Method: The concentration of hydrogen peroxide is determined by a standard titration method. It is used to verify the amount of hydrogen peroxide in biocidal products.
  • Spectrophotometric Analysis: The concentration is calculated by measuring the absorbance of the hydrogen peroxide solution.
  • Volumetric Analysis: The amount of hydrogen peroxide is determined using acid-base reactions.
