Scientific Control of Food Additives: Test Laboratory

Food additives are substances commonly used in today's food industry that affect many characteristics of products, from their shelf life to their taste and appearance. However, the use of these substances sometimes leads to health concerns. Therefore, the most important issue for both producers and consumers is to ensure that additives are controlled through scientific analysis and comply with regulations.

Why Are Food Additives Used?

Food additives are used for technical and functional purposes such as extending shelf life, maintaining texture, and achieving desired taste and color. For example, some additives prevent microbial growth to prevent spoilage, while others are used to enhance sweetness. These types of additives are particularly common in processed foods.

What Do Safety and Regulations Say?

Food additives are subject to toxicological evaluation by organizations such as the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) prior to use. Their use is permitted according to the “ADI” (acceptable daily intake) limit set for each substance.

In Turkey, the use of additives is regulated by the Turkish Food Codex Food Additives Regulation. This regulation clearly specifies which additives can be used in which foods, for what purpose, and in what quantities. Compliance with these rules is mandatory for manufacturers; consumers have the right to access this information.

Analyses of Additives

In specialized food control laboratories, the presence, quantity, and compliance of food additives with regulations are determined through detailed analyses. Sweeteners, preservatives, synthetic colorants, and certain special types of additives (e.g., nitrites, phosphates, or sulfites) are detected using sensitive instruments. Analyses are based on validated scientific methods, and results are reported by comparing them with regulatory standards.

These studies not only ensure product safety but also enable manufacturers to verify label claims, complete export documents, and identify potential risks in advance.

What Should Consumers Pay Attention To?

From a consumer perspective, food additives are not something to fear but rather components that need to be managed properly. Making it a habit to read labels, research E numbers, and choose products from reputable brands is important. It should be remembered that additives are not only synthetic but can also be derived from natural sources.
