In order to inform the public correctly, it has been deemed necessary to make the following statement following the news reports in some media outlets that 'carcinogenic food additives are used in bakery products'.

The legal regulation on food additives in our country is regulated by the Food Additives Regulation dated June 30, 2013.

In our country, the use of all additives prohibited in the EU is prohibited within the scope of the regulation prepared in line with the European Union. In fact, the use of certain additives in certain foods is also prohibited in our country, even though they are allowed in the EU.

The use of E928 (benzoyl peroxide) and E924 (potassium bromate) as food additives in our country and in EU countries is prohibited for all foods, including bread and bakery products.

In the last five years between 21.11.2015 and 21.11.2020, 513,493 inspections were carried out by our Ministry at flour and bakery product production and sales points, and no negativity was detected in terms of the substances in question.”

Benzoyl Peroxide: It is an additive generally used when bleaching flour.

Potassium Bromate: It is an additive used in many bakery products that increases the fermentation properties and increases the product volume, mostly used in yeast and fermented products.

The use of “Benzoyl Peroxide - Potassium Bromate” in foods is prohibited because it has been found to have carcinogenic effects in animal tests.
