The mains water we use in our daily lives undergoes various processes to remove microbial contaminants and make it safe. The most common of these processes is chlorination. Although chlorine plays an important role in disinfecting water, it is sometimes the subject of controversy due to some of its health and environmental impacts. So, how do chlorine and its by-products affect our health?
Chlorine is a powerful disinfectant that kills bacteria, viruses and parasites in drinking water, making it potable. It is especially important in preventing waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid and dysentery. In addition, the use of chlorine helps prevent recontamination of water during storage and transportation. The World Health Organization (WHO) and many health authorities recognize the use of certain levels of chlorine in drinking water as a safe and effective method.
Chlorine can react with organic substances in water to form by-products such as trihalomethanes (THM) and haloacetic acids (HAA). Some studies have shown that long-term exposure to these compounds can increase the risk of cancer and cause liver and kidney damage. In addition, inhalation or skin contact with chlorinated water can cause dry skin, eczema and respiratory irritation.
Chlorine is not the only chemical found in drinking water. Mains water can also contain fluoride, heavy metals (such as lead, mercury, arsenic) and nitrates. While fluoride is beneficial for dental health, overexposure can lead to bone disease. Heavy metals such as lead and mercury can have long-term negative effects on the nervous system and organ health.
Different water treatment methods can be used to protect against chlorine and its by-products:
While chlorine is an important substance for the safety of drinking water, too much can be harmful. Therefore, it is possible to make your water healthier with the right filtration methods. The amount of chlorine in water and the effectiveness of filtration can be tested and monitored by laboratories with accredited and specialized teams.
