Chlorine Dioxide as a Biocidal Product: Personal Exposure and Ambient Measurement in Indoor Air

WHAT IS CHLORINE DIOXIDE?

Chlorine dioxide is an oxidant that has been used as a disinfectant since the 1900s. It is a disinfectant with a very effective and long-lasting effect in destroying fungi, algae, microbes, viruses and pathogens by weakening their molecular bonds. Chlorine dioxide is effective over a wide pH range. The active solution maintains its effectiveness for about 12 months with storage in a cool and dark place.

IN WHICH DISINFECTIONS IS IT USED?

Its good environmental compatibility makes it possible to use it without hesitation in all kinds of water treatment. Chlorine dioxide is used as a disinfectant in many sectors such as agriculture, animal husbandry, health institutions, waste water treatment systems, hotels, pools, industry, beverage sector.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?

Chlorine dioxide is an excellent bactericide (E.coli), spore killer, virus killer, algaecide. Compared to other disinfectants (Paracetic Acid, Hydrogen Peroxide, Sodium Hypochlorite), it provides 2.5 times more oxidation power in a certain pH range and requires less labor. Provides stronger and faster disinfection effect compared to chlorine. Destroys microbiological residue in pipes and membranes. It kills biofilm and prevents its re-formation. It does not cause odor and taste problems caused by phenols, algae and their by-products in the water and also destroys the existing ones. Prevents the formation of harmful by-products such as trihalomethane, chlorphenol, AOX and chloramine.

WHY SHOULD IT BE MEASURED IN THE ENVIRONMENT?

The World Health Organization's “Concise International Chemical Assessment Document 37” states that the 8-hour average of all personal air exposure should not exceed 0.1 ppm (0.28 mg/m3) for chlorine dioxide due to its toxic effect on respiration.

After the mixture of components/precursors to form chlorine dioxide is provided or the reaction starts; the chlorine dioxide formed is continuously released and there is no system to stop the release. For this reason, until the end of the application life of the product, it is obligatory to certify with analysis reports that the chlorine dioxide concentration in the indoor air where the living creature is located does not exceed 0.1 ppm according to the area / volume recommended by the manufacturer for use.

In order for chlorine dioxide produced on-site with components or precursors to be used as a disinfectant in public health, it is obligatory to obtain a biocidal product license from the “Ministry of Health” according to the “Biocidal Products Regulation”.

In our laboratory, Chlorine Dioxide measurements and analyzes are carried out in all facilities accredited by TÜRKAK based on the “ASTM D 4490” method and with the ministerial authorization of the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services (İSGÜM).
