Precautions to be Taken Against the Problem of Counterfeiting in Vegetable Oils!

Counterfeiting in Vegetable Oils | Revealing the Truth with Tests

What is Vegetable Oil Counterfeiting?

Vegetable oils are indispensable in our kitchens. However, the increase in counterfeiting cases in recent years and the announcement of companies engaged in counterfeiting/adulteration by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry have changed the perception of consumers. While counterfeit or low-quality oils negatively affect human health, they also undermine the reliability of the food sector. It also causes financial damage for the consumer.

How to recognize fake vegetable oils?

The following methods are generally used to counterfeit vegetable oils:

  • Mixing cheaper oils with high value oils (e.g. adding cottonseed oil to olive oil)
  • Changing the properties of the oil using synthetic chemicals and additives
  • Misrepresentation of label information and concealment of origin

Advanced laboratory analysis is used to identify such counterfeits. Analysis results are valuable in terms of detecting falsifications in vegetable oils, punishing those responsible and protecting the consumer.

Detecting Real Oils with Laboratory Tests

Various laboratory tests are applied to determine the purity and quality of vegetable oils. Here are the most commonly used analysis methods:

1. Chemical Analysis

Chemical analysis examines the composition of the oil to detect additives and foreign oils. The main chemical tests are as follows:

  • Free Fatty Acid Analysis: Measures the quality of the oil by determining its acidic level.
  • Peroxide Value Test: Shows the oxidation level and deterioration status of the oil.
  • Saponification Number: Analyzes the types of triglycerides contained in oil.

2. Spectroscopic and Chromatographic Analyzes

These methods are used to reveal the chemical structure of the oil in more detail:

  • Gas Chromatography (GC): Detects fake or adulterated oils by separating the different components in the oil.
  • NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) Spectroscopy: Verifies the authenticity of the oil by determining its molecular structure.

3. Oil Adulteration Tests

These tests are carried out to determine whether oils have been adulterated with other oils. It is used to detect common fraud, especially in high-value oils such as olive oil.

How to Avoid Counterfeit Oils

Consumers should take some precautions to protect themselves from fake vegetable oils:

  • Choose trusted brands: It is important to choose products from known and audited manufacturers.
  • Carefully examine label information: Check the ingredients, place of production and quality certificates.
  • Request laboratory test results: Seeing the analysis reports of the oil you buy will help you understand its reliability.
  • Avoid products with suspiciously low prices: Oils sold at a fraction of the market price are likely to be counterfeit.
