Determination of Bromate

Bromate is a by-product that can occur when ozone is used for disinfection in drinking water. At the same time, its formation is undesirable because it is carcinogenic. The presence of bromate is a critical situation, especially in public water systems.

The maximum contaminant level (MCL) in drinking water is limited to 10μg/L bromate by the EPA and the European Commission. Apart from drinking water, you may also be exposed to bromate through tap water.

Exposure to high doses of bromate is harmful to human health. It has been observed that it causes cancer in studies conducted on animals. Bromate poisoning can cause fatigue, loss of reflexes, and health problems with the central nervous system. There is also anemia, which means a lack of red blood cells. As exposure increases, severe consequences such as kidney damage and hearing loss may occur.
