Surface waters used in domestic or industrial areas undergo some decolorization processes. Dissolved or suspended substances such as humic acids and humates, tannin, lignin, iron compounds in water in the form of ferric humate give color to water. The colors of the waters may change, especially during the flow, with the addition of rain water and due to overflows.


The colors of the waters; it is called as unreal (apparent) color and true color.

  • Unreal (apparent) color: Color due to suspended solids
  • True color: Color formed from colloidal substances

The process of determining the colors is important especially in the color removal processes in wastewater. Color changes can be seen in wastewater generated in the textile industry and the paper industry. Determination of Color in Water is one of the quality tests carried out before its use, especially in surface waters.
