What is Color in Water and Why is it Important?

Color in water is the result of visible light reflection and is determined by the dissolved or suspended substances in the water. Color is the first element that affects the appearance of water and provides important information about water quality.

Color in water is often associated with transparency, visible color and hues. Water can appear in various colors by interacting directly or indirectly with pollutants in the surrounding environment. These color changes may indicate that some contaminants, natural organic matter or microbiological effects have been introduced into the water.

Color determination in water is important in the following respects:

  • Biological and Chemical Effects: Color changes may indicate the presence of dissolved substances in the water (e.g. humic acids, chlorophyll, metal ions, etc.). These substances affect the biological and chemical properties of water.
  • Visual Aesthetics: Aesthetically important, especially for drinking water and swimming pools. Dirty and colored water can have psychological effects on users.
  • Water Pollution and Presence of Contaminants: Color changes in water can be an early warning sign that the water is contaminated. In particular, industrial wastes, pesticides or natural substances (e.g. algae) can change the color of water.


Why is Water Color Determination Performed?

  1. Monitoring Water Quality: Color is one of the first indicators that help monitor the biological and chemical status of water. Changes in water color can indicate that environmental factors, industrial wastes, pesticides or natural pollutants have entered the water.
  2. Environmental Pollution Detection: Wastes released from industrial plants or sewage leaks in residential areas can cause changes in water color. Color analysis is used to detect this type of pollution.
  3. Drinking Water Quality Control: Drinking water sources need to be regularly monitored to ensure healthy water for human consumption. Drinking water should be transparent and clean. Colored water indicates the presence of potentially harmful contaminants.
  4. Industrial and Agricultural Applications: Color analysis is also used in agricultural irrigation and industrial water management. Fertilizers and pesticides used in agriculture or industrial wastes can change the color of water.


What are the Methods of Color Determination in Water?

Several different analysis methods are used for color determination in water. These methods have been developed to accurately measure the physical and chemical properties of water.

  1. Spectrophotometric Method: This method measures the color change of water by passing light through the water sample. The absorption of light determines the color of the water and the concentration of the substances it contains. It provides high accuracy and precision. It also has the ability to measure different color intensities. It is preferred for industrial water, drinking water and environmental water monitoring.
  2. APHA (American Public Health Association) Method: APHA is a method of color determination by adding a water sample into a specific solution to determine the color intensity of water. The concentration of color units is calculated. It can only measure color intensity within a certain range.
  3. Lovibond Color Measurement: This method is done by comparing the water sample to the colors on a specific color measurement card. The water sample is compared with different color intensities. It is an easy and fast method. It allows colors to be measured in limited intervals.
  4. Standard Color Unit (SBU) Method: This method uses measurements based on a specific standard to determine the color of water and is expressed using color units.
