The numerical expression of the conductivity of an aqueous solution is defined as Conductivity. Water, which does not carry a net charge, can conduct electric current well with the presence of impurities and dissolved substances. The conductivity of water is determined depending on the following conditions.
TS 9748 EN 27888 is a standard that provides guidance on electrical conductivity determination for water quality monitoring and analysis. This standard defines the methods used to measure the electrical conductivity (or electrical permeability) level of water and the procedures required to ensure the accuracy of these measurements. Electrical conductivity is an important parameter in determining the mineral matter content and total dissolved ion concentration of water. This measurement is of critical importance, especially where water quality and potability are concerned.
With the conductivity measured in water, the ion content of the water can be determined. Conductivity varies depending on the purity of the water. The degree of conductivity in water is measured with a conductivimeter. It is possible to determine the purity and quality of water by the conductivity of water.
Electrical conductivity indicates the level of mineralization of water, which can affect the suitability of water for potability, irrigation and industrial applications. High conductivity indicates that the water is mineralized and that these minerals are likely to have negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems. Moreover, this parameter is a determining factor for water treatment processes and environmental protection management.
TS 9748 EN 27888 standard covers electrical conductivity determination on different types of water such as drinking water, surface water, wastewater, and groundwater. Water samples are analyzed using electrical conductivity meters (EC meters). These instruments directly measure changes in electrical conductivity to determine the electrical conductivity of water and record the results in internationally recognized units.
