What is Ethyl Alcohol?

Ethyl alcohol is a colorless, flammable and fragrant type of alcohol with the chemical formula C₂H₅OH. It is obtained by biological fermentation or synthetic processes. Its intended use in cosmetic products is usually as follows:

  • Use as a Solvent: Provides homogeneous mixing of other ingredients.
  • Antiseptic Properties: Reduces microbial load and acts as a preservative.
  • Volatile Component: Allows products to evaporate without leaving any residue on the skin.

Ethyl alcohol is one of the most commonly used chemicals in cosmetic products. Alcohol is one of the best solvents used in cosmetic products. With the use of alcohol in cosmetic products, some substances are dissolved or activated. Alcohol is especially used in perfumes.

Ethanol is also widely used in cosmetic products. Ethyl alcohol is used in cosmetic products with delipiding properties used for oily skin. The presence of alcohol in cosmetic products serves to eliminate excess sebum collected on the skin.

Uses:

  1. Perfumes and Deodorants: To dissolve odor components and provide easy evaporation on the skin.

  3. After Shave Lotions: Refreshing and protective effects.
  4. Skin Cleansers: Helps to remove oil and dirt from the skin.

  • Provides effective protection against microorganisms.

Potential Risks: Products containing excessively high amounts of ethyl alcohol may cause skin dryness and irritation. Therefore, the rate of use should be carefully controlled.


Legal Regulations for Ethyl Alcohol in Cosmetic Products

  • EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC No 1223/2009): Specific limits on the use of ethyl alcohol are defined. Allergenic effects and safety of use tests are mandatory.
  • FDA ( USA): The alcohol content used in cosmetic products must be indicated on the label and safety analyses must be performed.
  • Turkey Cosmetics Legislation: The safety of cosmetic products containing ethyl alcohol must comply with the criteria set by the Ministry of Health.
