The biggest reason for its use in energy drinks is that it is a key ingredient aimed at reducing fatigue and improving concentration and reaction times.
Energy drinks are beverages that aim to boost physical and mental performance, usually containing caffeine, sugar, vitamins, amino acids (e.g. taurine) and sometimes herbal extracts. The “Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on Energy Drinks” states that the amount of glucoronolactone in the composition of energy drinks should be 20 mg/L.
The Turkish Food Codex Energy Drinks Communiqué states that “Flavored soft drinks containing one or more of taurine, inositol and glucoronolactone substances together with caffeine cannot be placed on the market under a food name other than energy drinks.” Due to the statement, “Glucoronolactone Determination” is carried out especially in soft drinks. Thus, the presence of glucoronolactone, which should not be used except in energy drinks, is checked.
It is important to determine this compound to check whether it is within safe consumption limits. The determination is performed by advanced analytical methods such as liquid chromatography (HPLC). This analysis helps to check whether energy drinks comply with legal regulations and plays a critical role for the safety of consumers.
