Determination of Taurine in Sports Drinks

Taurine, an important component of energy drinks, is an amino acid abundant in meat and seafood, as well as brain, retina, heart and reproductive organ cells. It is a flavored soft drink containing caffeine, which may contain taurine, glucuronolactone, inositol, carbohydrates, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and other food and its components.

Within the scope of "Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on Energy Drinks", the limits of substances that can be found in the composition of energy drinks are determined as follows.

  • Caffeine 150mg/L
  • Inositol 100mg/L
  • Glucorolactone 20 mg/L
  • Taurine 800 mg/L
As stated in the Turkish Food Codex Energy Drinks Communiqué, “Flavored soft drinks containing caffeine together with one or more of taurine, inositol and glucuronolactone cannot be placed on the market under a food name other than energy drink.” Due to the phrase Taurine Determination is carried out in many beverages.

Taurine Determination is carried out in accredited and authorized Food Analysis Laboratories to determine the amount present in various soft drinks or energy drinks.
