What is Temperature in Water and Why is it Important?
Temperature in water is a measure of the molecular mobility of water and is usually expressed in centigrade (°C). The temperature of water can be altered by various natural and industrial processes. The temperature of water is of great importance for the health of living things, especially in aquatic ecosystems.
- Chemical Reactions: As water temperature increases, chemical reactions accelerate. This can affect the solubility of substances dissolved in water (e.g. oxygen).
- Biological Effects: Temperature directly affects the metabolic rate and biodiversity of organisms in the aquatic environment. Sudden changes in water temperature can create stress in ecosystems.
- Dissolved Oxygen Level: As temperature increases, the dissolved oxygen capacity of water decreases. This can lead to difficulties in oxygen supply for fish and other aquatic life.
Why Determine Temperature in Water?
- Monitoring the Aquatic Ecosystem: Changes in water temperature can affect the living conditions of organisms in aquatic ecosystems. In particular, freshwater ponds, rivers and oceans are directly affected by these changes.

Water Temperature Determination Methods
Several different methods and instruments are used for temperature determination in water. These methods have been developed to accurately measure the physical properties of water.
- Thermometer Method: Thermometers are simple devices that directly measure the temperature of water. Liquid thermometers contain glass and liquid (usually mercury or alcohol) and indicate the temperature of water. They may not be used in situations where high precision is required.
- Electronic Temperature Meters: Digital temperature meters measure the temperature of water with electronic sensors and usually display it on digital screens. They are preferred in industrial water, drinking water and environmental water monitoring processes.
- Thermocouples and Thermistors: A thermocouple is a sensor that is a combination of two different metals and generates an electrical voltage based on temperature changes. Thermistors are semiconductors sensitive to temperature change. They are widely used in industrial and environmental water monitoring systems.
