EN 71 consists of a series of standards prepared to determine toy safety, chemical content, presence of heavy metals, flammability, mechanical properties, etc.


Purpose of EN 71 Standard

The EN 71 standard provides a set of safety requirements and test procedures aimed at protecting the health and safety of children. This standard ensures that toys undergo certain tests before they are sold on the market. The main objectives of EN 71 are:

  • The safety of children: Toys must be designed to be suitable for use by children and must not present any physical, chemical or biological hazard.
  • Legal compliance: To ensure that toy manufacturers comply with legal regulations in the European Union.
  • Health protection: Toys must not contain harmful substances that threaten the health of children.


Scope of EN 71 Standard

EN 71 applies to all toys produced for children. This scope includes various sub-headings according to the material structure, dimensions, design and use of toys. The scope of EN 71 includes the following elements:

  • Suitability of toys for age groups: Toys should be intended for specific age groups. This means that the size, shape and materials used are designed according to the developmental characteristics of children.
  • Chemical and physical testing: It is determined that toys should not contain chemicals that could adversely affect children's health. In addition, toys must be tested to ensure that they are physically safe for children.
  • Mechanical safety: Toys should not have small parts, should not contain spikes and should not be breakable.
  • Non-flammability and flammable properties: Toys should be designed to reduce the risk of fire.
