Ethyl Acetate, which is preferred due to its low cost, low toxicity and pleasant smell, is primarily used as a solvent and diluent. Ethyl acetate is considered safe by the FDA as a synthetic sweetener.
The FDA allows it to be used as a secondary food additive as a solvent. Therefore, ethyl alcohol also has a place in the food industry and primarily acts as an artificial flavoring for confectionery, ice cream and cakes. The use of ethyl acetate as a solvent in food focuses on creating decaffeinated coffee. Caffeine is removed by washing the coffee beans with ethyl acetate solution in a process that can take up to 10 hours. It is also an ester commonly found in wines and helps give wines a fruity taste. Too much ethyl acetate can reduce the quality of the wine, but a small amount of the ingredients can give the wine a different flavor.
It is widely used in cosmetic products, nail polish removers. Ethyl acetate as a solvent can effectively thin and remove nail polish.
It is also used in many perfumes, especially because of its easy evaporation on the skin, its nice smell, not forming an oily layer behind and its gelling feature. It is also used in mascara and teeth whitening products.
