Formaldehyde Analysis in Biocidal Products: Efficacy and Safety Assessment

What is Formaldehyde (HCHO)?

Formaldehyde is a reactive chemical used in many products and is harmful to human health. It is especially used in disinfectant products due to its lethal effect on insects and most microorganisms.

Formaldehyde is used in many areas other than disinfectants, but it has significant hazards for human health. People exposed to high doses of formaldehyde are more likely to get cancer. Studies have shown that formaldehyde, which has carcinogenic effects, has harmful effects on respiratory, nervous and digestive systems.

Bactericidal, Fungicidal and Virucidal Activity

  • Formaldehyde oxidizes the protein structure and DNA of microorganisms, killing them.
  • Its broad spectrum antimicrobial activity makes it suitable for medical and industrial disinfection.

What are the Application Areas?

Medical device disinfection: It shows effective microorganism destroying properties on devices and equipment.

Water disinfection: It is used to ensure the biological cleanliness and drinkability standards of water.

The types of products in which formaldehyde can be used are specified as follows in Annex A - List of Substances for which Product Type is defined within the scope of the“Biocidal Products Regulation”.

  • Product Type 1: Human hygiene
  • Product Type 2: Disinfectants and algicides not intended for direct application to humans or animals
  • Product Type 3: Animal hygiene
  • Product Type 4: Food and feed area
  • Product type 5: Drinking water
  • Product Type 6: Protect products during storage
  • Product Type 9: Preservatives for fibers, leather, rubber and polymerized materials
  • Product Type 11: Protectors for liquid coolant and processing systems
  • Product Type 12: Slimicides
  • Product Type 13: Protectors for machining or cutting fluids
  • Product Type 20: Control of other vertebrates
  • Product Type 22: Embalming and taxidermy fluids

Formaldehyde is used as an important ingredient in biocidal products with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. The efficacy and safety of this compound is determined by accurate analysis methods. Analyzing the chemical, verifying its concentration and assessing health risks guarantees the effective use of biocidal products without harming user health.
