TheGB 18584 standard contains a set of requirements limiting the concentrations of harmful substances in materials used in the manufacture of wood-based furniture in China. The objective of this standard is to set certain limits so that the chemical components used in the manufacture of furniture do not harm the environment and the health of users. Below are the key elements covered by this standard:
Formaldehyde is a chemical compound found in adhesives and other binding materials in many wooden furniture. However, formaldehyde is harmful to human health and long-term exposure can increase the risk of cancer. GB 18584 sets certain levels to limit formaldehyde emissions. Exceeding these limits may prevent the sale of furniture.
While azo dyes are used in some textile and leather materials, some types can be carcinogenic. For this reason, the GB 18584 standard limits the azo compounds contained in dyes used in the manufacture of wooden furniture. Azo dyes need to be replaced with non-toxic, safe alternatives.
Heavy metals, especially elements such as lead, cadmium and mercury, can cause serious health risks when used in furniture. These substances should not be included in the surface finishing materials and paints used in furniture production. TheGB 18584 standard limits the use of heavy metals and ensures that these metals are at minimum levels.
Some plastic materials, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), can be harmful to the environment and can lead to the release of various toxic compounds during the production process. TheGB 18584 standard states that PVC content should be limited and more environmentally friendly materials should be used. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other harmful chemicals are also prohibited in furniture.
Some wood materials are treated with pesticides and fungicides to protect them from fungi and insects. However, these chemical residues can damage furniture products and threaten the health of users. GB 18584 stipulates that such residues should be reduced to minimum levels.
The use of PVC is common in some parts of wooden furniture, especially in adhesives and veneer materials. However, given the environmental impacts of PVC and its negative effects on human health, the GB 18584 standard restricts the use of PVC and encourages the use of alternative materials.
