GB/T 5296.5: Instructions for use for products of consumer interest - Toys

Scope of GB 5296 Standard

Part 5 of the GB 5296 standard contains the basic principles for instructions for the use of toys, marking contents, forms, placement positions, font style and font size requirements.

  • Toys designed or explicitly prescribed for children under 14 years old to play are tested under GB 5296 standard.
  • Delivery of toy products shall include instructions for use.
  • The instructions for use should enable consumers to use the toy correctly and safely and minimize the harm caused by improper use.
  • The instructions for use must fully describe the effect of the use of the product and must not be used to cover up design defects.
  • Safety warning instructions or warning signs should be provided for toys that may cause harm during use.
  • The preparation of instructions for use, safety warnings and durability requirements for instructions for use shall comply with the provisions of GB5296.1.


General Requirements for Toys

  • Product name: The product name must be appropriate to the country name, industry and business standards and must indicate the actual characteristics of the product.
  • Product number: The model and specifications to be marked in the user manual must be compatible with the model on the product.
  • Product standard number: The serial number of the standard to which the product applies shall be indicated on the packaging, instructions for use or label.
  • Age range: Indicate on the product packaging, instructions for use and labels the age range to which the toy applies. The applicable age range and identifying age mark labeling requirements shall comply with the provisions of GB6675.
  • Safety warning: Toys that require warning signs or warning instructions shall be labeled. The labeling requirements and wording methods of safety warnings shall comply with the provisions of GB6675.
  • Name and content of the main ingredients of plush fabric toys: Plush toys shall indicate the common name and content of the fabric used in the product and the main components of the filling material.
  • Safe use method and assembly diagram: For products with complex structure and methods of use, difficult to install, attachable and assembled toys shall follow the correct use procedures in the instructions or labels, and the steps shall indicate detailed methods of use or assembly diagrams.
  • Toy care: For toys that affect safe use or health and hygiene, care and maintenance methods shall be marked.
  • Safe use period: For products that must be used within a limited period of time, the date of manufacture and the period of safe use must be marked (marked in order of year, month and day).
  • Instructions for use on the product or packaging should be placed in an easily recognizable place. Safety warning labels for plush toys should be sewn onto the product.
  • Font, font size: For products sold domestically, standard Chinese characters shall be used in the instructions for use. The size of Chinese characters, numbers and letters should not be smaller than five points. The font size of safety warnings such as “Danger”, “Warning” and “Caution” should be no smaller than four point bold and the font size of the warning content should be no smaller than five point black.
