GOTS Certification: Organic Textile Quality and Sustainability

What is a GOTS Certificate?

GOTS Certification: Organic Textile Quality and Sustainability

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)

It is one of the most widespread and respected certification systems that determine the quality and sustainability criteria of organic textile products. Created in 2006, this standard is a certificate designed with environmental and social sustainability goals. While GOTS certified products are produced from natural fabrics and yarns used in organic agriculture, environmentally sensitive methods are applied in production processes. At the same time, labor rights and social responsibility also play an important role. GOTS certification guarantees that organic textile products have high standards in terms of both quality and environmental impact.

Organic clothing brands prefer certainty over uncertainty and use a lot of organic cotton with GOTS certification, which bans all toxic chemicals. In addition, this certificate does not allow the use of genetically modified seeds.

Looking for GOTS certification on your garments? This is available in two variants

  • GOTS label from more than 95% organic textile fibers
  • GOTS (%x) label with a minimum of 70% organic textile fibers

In practice, this means that the label always indicates that the products consist of a minimum of 70% organic textile fibers. If this percentage is between 70% and 95%, this must be indicated on the label. When no percentage is indicated on the label, the product has more than 95% organic textile fibers.

Scope and Requirements of GOTS Certification

a) Organic Content Obligation

A GOTS certified product must contain at least 70% organic ingredients. Natural materials such as organic cotton and organic wool are used as the main components of the products. This ratio guarantees that the product is completely organic. In addition, products with 95% or more organic content can carry the label “organic”, which is an indication that the product is of high quality and natural.

b) Prohibition of Chemical Use

GOTS certification prohibits the use of harmful chemicals in the production process. Not using harmful chemicals such as azo dyes, formaldehydes, chlorinated solvents is of great importance in terms of protecting both the environment and human health. GOTS allows the use of only environmentally friendly and non-toxic paints and chemicals.

c) Environmental Standards

GOTS emphasizes the need for environmentally sound practices in the production process. Energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management and pollution prevention practices are an integral part of the production processes of GOTS certified products. In addition, measures such as recycling, water treatment and reduction of carbon footprint are also encouraged.

Market Share and Future of GOTS Certified Products

Today, the organic and sustainable fashion industry is growing rapidly. Increasing consumer awareness and rising demand for environmentally friendly products are increasing the market share of GOTS certified products. GOTS certification has become an important label proving that brands fulfill their environmental and social responsibilities. In the future, GOTS certified products are expected to become more widespread and more brands are expected to obtain this certification.
