ICUMSA Color Testing

The International Commission on Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis, or ICUMSA for short, describes the test methods required for the colorimetric determination of filtered sugar suspensions with known brix value. The degree and quality of sugar is evaluated with the ICUMSA color scale.

The color of sugar varies depending on the degree of refining:
- The color of raw sugar is dark brown.
- The color of refined sugar is white.

ICUMSA color scale after the refining process. The yellow color originating from molasses can be determined and the production process can be mastered with this method. Measurements can be made using a colorimeter and photometer. The ICUMSA Color Scale can be used to determine the solution color of white sugars, brown sugars, raw sugars and colored syrups.
