Color is one of the most important characteristics evaluating the quality of sugar and food products. The visual appeal of products directly affects consumer perception. Therefore, the food industry and sugar manufacturers use various test methods to determine the color quality of their products. TheICUMSA color test is a widely used analysis method for color assessment of sugar and other food products.
ICUMSA (International Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis) is an organization that sets an international standard for the analysis of sugar. ICUMSA has developed an accepted method for color analysis, especially in the sugar industry. This test is a system that measures the color intensity, clarity and purity of sugar. Color is often an important indicator of whether sugar is pure and whether there are any defects in the production process.
The ICUMSA color test is a measurement system used to determine the color parameters of sugar. The color is often referred to as “ICUMSA color” and is directly related to the degree to which the sugar has been refined. This test is specifically designed to assess the transparency and purity of sugar. The ICUMSA value is usually expressed in 100 IU (International Units) and a lower value indicates the presence of purer and higher quality sugar.
The ICUMSA color test is done by measuring the sugar sample under a specific light. This test is performed using a spectrophotometer and involves the following steps:
