ISO 663: Determination of Insoluble Foreign Matter Content - Methods and Applications

What is the Scope of the ISO 663 Standard?

ISO 663 is a standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and relates to the determination of fat content. This standard, whose full name is “Animal and vegetable fats and oils -- Determination of insoluble impurities content”, defines methods for the determination of the amount of insoluble impurities in animal and vegetable fats and oils.

Purpose of the Standard:

  • This standard is used for the determination of insoluble impurities (solid impurities, sand, sediment, etc.) to determine the quality of fats and oils.
  • It is especially important in controlling the purity and quality of oils used in the food industry, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products.

Application Area:

  • Animal fats (e.g. butter, lard).
  • Vegetable oils (e.g. olive oil, sunflower oil).

Basic Principle of the Method:

  • The fat sample is dissolved in a specific solvent (usually organic solvents).
  • Insoluble substances are filtered, dried and weighed.
  • The mass of impurities obtained is calculated as a percentage of the total mass of the sample.

What are the Products Analyzed under ISO 663 Standard?

Testing procedures can be carried out in accordance with this standard, especially in milk and dairy products or fats obtained from milk and dairy products. The substances expressed as impurities in the oils in question; mechanical impurities, mineral substances, carbohydrates, carbohydrates, nitrogenous substances, calcium soaps, or acid lactones, various resins, oxidized fatty acids, hydroxy acids and glycerides of these substances.

If the inclusion of soaps or oxidized fatty acids in the content of insoluble impurities is undesirable, a different solvent or procedure may be required. The situation can be evaluated according to the product to be tested or the analysis result to be obtained.

Interpretation of Results

  • Purity Assessment: The amount of insoluble impurities in a pure oil should be very low. A high amount of foreign matter indicates that the purity of the oil is low.
  • Quality Control: The results are evaluated according to quality standards and specifications. Oils used in food and pharmaceutical products must not exceed certain insoluble impurity limits.

What is the Importance of the ISO 663 Standard?

ISO 663 is an important standard used to assess the quality and purity of fats and oils. In terms of food safety and product quality, the use of such standards is critical to protecting the health and safety of producers and consumers.
