Milk urea nitrogen is a very important and small molecule of milk that reflects the balance between carbohydrate and protein. The high concentration of urea in milk causes the following problems:
- Potential milk losses
- Infertility risk
In general, urea is an organic liquid found in blood and body fluids. It is also a normal component of milk. The amount of urea found in milk is expressed as “milk urea nitrogen”. The milk urea nitrogen value is the preferred test method for measuring and evaluating field conditions.
Factors affecting milk urea nitrogen:
- Consumption of digestible protein
- Consumption of non-degradable protein
- Water consumption
- The amount of non-structural carbohydrates
- Dry matter consumption
- Feeding time
- Feeding method (such as total mix ration, TMR or separate forage/concentrate feed)
- Liver and kidney function
With milk urea nitrogen analysis, you can have an idea about the factors mentioned above.
