Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on Bee Products: Honey and Bee Products Standards

Bee products have an important place on our tables with their contribution to human health and nutritional properties. However, certain standards must be followed to ensure the quality and reliability of these products. In Turkey, the production and marketing criteria for honey and other bee products are regulated under the Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on Bee Products.

What is the Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on Bee Products?

The Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on Bee Products sets out the standards to be followed in the production, processing, storage and sales processes of bee products such as honey, pollen, royal jelly, propolis and bee venom in Turkey. This communiqué aims to protect the natural structure of the products and ensure that consumers have access to safe food.

What are the Assurances Provided to Consumers by the Communiqué?

  1. Healthy Product Consumption: It prevents the sale of unnatural honey and other products and provides consumers with reliable products.
  2. Prevention of Counterfeiting and Adulteration: It enables the difference between real honey and fake honey to be determined.
  3. Quality Standard: The fact that all producers comply with the same standards facilitates the acceptance of products in the national and international market.

Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Publishes TGK Bee Products Communiqué!

The Communiqué on Bee Products, first published by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry on April 25, 2024, includes the issues regarding the production, preparation, processing, preservation, storage, storage, transportation and placing on the market of bee (Apis mellifera L.) products in accordance with the technique and hygienically.

The products subject to regulations under the Communiqué are as follows;


Bee bread placed on the market as food or food supplements,

  • Bee pollen
  • Royal jelly
  • Raw propolis,
  • Propolis
  • Powdered royal jelly
  • Dried pollen

Products to be used in applications in the Regulation on Traditional and Complementary Medicine Practices are not covered by this communiqué.

Products within the scope must comply with the regulations on additives, contaminants, pesticide residues, veterinary drug residues and microbiological criteria. According to Annex-1, no external substances can be added to these products. The desired properties of the products should be as follows.
