Murine Norovirus Test in Virucidal Activity Tests: Efficacy and Evaluation

What is murine norovirus (MNV)?

Murine norovirus (MNV) is a type of virus with a positive-sense RNA genome. Murine norovirus is closely related to the infectious human norovirus that causes gastroenteritis and was isolated in 2003 and is known to be a sporadic, lethal pathogen in laboratory mice.

What is the Murine Norovirus Test?

The Murin norovirus test is an assay to measure the efficacy of disinfectants or biocidal products, especially against non-enveloped viruses such as norovirus. Non-enveloped viruses are generally more resistant to environmental conditions and more difficult to inactivate because they do not have a lipid envelope. MNV is preferred in virucidal assays because of this resistance.

Murine Norovirus serves as the most suitable model for exploring the mechanisms of infection of human norovirus. For this reason, it is tested together with Poliovirus Type 1, Adenovirus Type 5, Bacteriophages, Vaccinia Virus, especially within the scope of efficacy tests in biocidal products.

Human noroviruses cause gastroenteritis epidemics that cause a large number of endemic cases worldwide. Noroviruses affect most people of different ages and can spread easily in crowded environments such as public transportation, schools and hospitals.

Noroviruses are considered class B biological agents due to their high stability, sudden outbreak and debilitating properties. This virus is mostly transmitted through the mouth and feces. In general, it is most commonly transmitted through person-to-person contact, contaminated water and contaminated food.

Because norovirus spreads so easily, there are many precautions to be taken. First of all, we should avoid crowded environments as much as we can. Then, measures such as frequent hand washing and using various hand and surface disinfectants can be taken. Of course, since it can be transmitted through food, food should be washed before consumption. Drinking water should be tested at regular intervals and reliable brands should be preferred for drinking water.
