Organic Food Testing: Reliable Methods for Determining Naturalness and Quality

Today, increasing health problems and environmental pollution have led people to turn to natural and organic products. Organic product production has attracted more attention especially in the food sector.

Organic products are especially preferred in child nutrition. Organic product prices are above normal. The reason for this is that in general, when the shelf life of foods is taken as a basis, they are products that deteriorate more easily and are produced with less efficiency.

What is Organic Product?

Within the scope of the “Regulation on the Principles and Implementation of Organic Agriculture”, organic product is defined as a certified product in raw, semi-finished or finished form produced in accordance with the principles of organic farming activities.

The production of organic products starts in the field. Pesticides and similar chemicals are not used in the production of organic products. Afterwards, the organic product is either directly packaged and offered for sale, or it is processed and packaged without any additives or chemicals and offered for sale.

Certification of Organic Product

What is more important than the production of organic products is their certification. Organic products should be certified after passing certain tests and inspections and should be offered for sale in this way.

Certification of organic product production is a certification process in which every stage of the product such as harvesting, processing, storage, packaging is inspected and made as a result of the inspection. “Organic Product Certification” is carried out not only by conducting tests on the product, but also on the basis of business audits.

Within the scope of the Regulation on the Principles and Implementation of Organic Agriculture, substances and products that can be used in the production of processed organic foods are listed. Food production must be carried out and certified in accordance with the substances specified in the Regulation.

The Importance of Organic Food Testing

  1. Natural and Healthy Products: Organic foods are free of harmful substances such as pesticides, chemical fertilizers and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). These tests confirm that such chemicals are not used and increase consumer confidence.
  2. Reliability and Quality: In the organic certification process, tests are conducted to determine whether the products meet organic standards. Quality control of organic products ensures that these products are labeled correctly.
  3. Legal Requirements: Organic food producers have to prove that their products comply with organic standards. Tests fulfill this requirement. It ensures traceability of each stage in the organic food supply chain.
