What is pH?
pH is a measure that determines whether a solution is acidic, neutral or basic (alkaline). pH ranges from 0 to 14:
- pH 7: Neutral (for example, pure water).
- pH < 7: Acidic (e.g. lemon juice, vinegar).
- pH > 7: Basic or alkaline (e.g. soaps, bleach).
The skin naturally has a slightly acidic pH, usually between 4.5 and 5.5. This natural acidic environment protects the skin from microorganisms and external factors.
The Importance of pH in Cosmetic Products
The pH of cosmetic products has a direct impact on skin health and product performance. Here are some key reasons for the importance of pH analysis in cosmetic products:
- Skin Compatibility and Safety: Acidic pH levels are generally skin compatible and support the skin's natural protective barrier. However, overly acidic or alkaline pH values can lead to dry skin, irritation, allergic reactions and even skin damage. Adjust pH according to skin type: For example, dry skin often adapts better with slightly acidic pH levels, whereas oily skin sometimes needs more neutral or slightly alkaline products.
- Product Efficacy: Many cosmetic compounds, especially active ingredients (e.g. acidic compounds, vitamin C, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)) work most effectively at certain pH levels. The wrong pH value can reduce the effectiveness of these ingredients. For example, AHAs (such as glycolic acid) are generally more effective in an acidic environment. Therefore, the pH level in products should be optimized according to the purpose of the product.
- Microbial Control: The pH of cosmetic products can help inhibit the growth of microorganisms. For example, low pH values can inhibit the growth of some microorganisms, which helps to make products microbiologically safe.
- Product Stability: Imbalances in pH can lead to changes in the physical properties of cosmetic products (e.g. discoloration, sedimentation). For example, very acidic or basic formulations can change the consistency, color and odor of the product.
pH Analysis Methods in Cosmetic Products
The pH value in cosmetic products is measured by different methods. Below are the main analysis methods commonly used for pH determination in cosmetic products:
- pH Meter: The pH meter is the most widely used device for measuring pH in cosmetic products. The device directly measures the acidic or alkaline properties of the liquid phase of the product. pH meter measurement gives very precise and accurate results. The product sample is placed in the pH meter and the pH value displayed on the meter is recorded.
- pH Papers and Test Strips: pH papers or test strips are simple and practical tools for quickly measuring pH. However, they are less accurate than a pH meter. Test strips provide a scale that indicates the pH range based on the color of the solution. This method is particularly suitable for rapid analysis in the field.
- pH Titration: The pH titration method is used to determine the acidic or alkaline properties of a solution. Here, a titrant is added that triggers a pH change and the pH value is continuously monitored throughout the titration. This method is often used to determine acidic or alkaline compounds in complex formulations.
