What is Siloxane (D4, D5, D6)? Usage in Cosmetics ... What Are the Benefits and Harms?

Siloxane (D4, D5, D6) Analysis in Cosmetics

Cyclotetrasiloxane (D4), cyclopentasiloxane (D5), cyclohexaciloxane (D6), which are used in cosmetic products such as creams, shampoos, hair styling, body lotions for their smoothness and refreshing effect, are essential oils with a cyclic chemical structure and various properties. D4, D5, D6 are chemicals from the silicone group.

D4, D5, D6 siloxanes have been banned by the European Chemicals Agency as of 2020. Cosmetic products containing 0.1% of one of the ingredients cannot be sold in the European market.

Why Use Of These Chemicals Are Banned? What are the damages?

D4, D5 siloxanes are thought to have major damages due to their toxic effects and long-term accumulation in the environment, and their use in any products that need to be rinsed after D4, D5 is prohibited as of 2020.

The European Commission has defined D4 as a persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) and very persistent, very bioaccumulative (vPvB) substance. D5 has been identified as a vPvB substance. It has been banned due to concerns that D4 and D5 could potentially accumulate in the environment and cause unpredictable and irreversible effects in the long term.
