Specific Migration – Determination of Phthalate

Phthalates are commonly used to add flexibility to packaging materials. Phthalate; cause cancer, health problems in the developmental and reproductive systems. For this reason, Phthalate Determination is carried out within the scope of Specific Migration Tests, especially in packaging and kitchen materials that come into contact with food.

Phthalate may be transferred from plastic kitchen materials such as packaging, disposable plates, spoons, forks, and storage containers that come into contact with foods for a long time. Long-term phthalate entry into the body causes major health problems. Generally, phthalate should be tested in preferred packaging materials to provide flexibility in rigid plastics.

According to the Communiqué on Market Surveillance and Inspection on the Content of Hazardous Chemicals for Some Consumer Products, the phthalate limit should not exceed 0.1% (on the basis of mass).
