TS 9546 EN 12880: Determination of Dry Residue and Water Content

Scope and Purpose of TS 9546 EN 12880 Standard

EN 12880 defines the methods to be applied for the determination of dry residue (solids) and water content in sludge samples. It provides characterization of sludge by determining the amount of water and dry residue in the sludge. It provides accurate and reliable information on dry residue and water content to ensure sludge management and environmental compatibility, determine the quality of sludge and optimize sludge disposal methods.

TS 9546 EN 12880 standard covers the “Determination of dry residue and water content” test methods performed on sewage sludge in environmental analysis laboratories. This test method is generally applied on the following specimens:

  • Liquid, paste-like slurries
  • Sludges containing solids
  • Soil samples
  • Waste materials

“TS 9546 EN 12880: Characterization of sludges - Determination of dry residue and water content” test method is used to determine the dry matter and moisture content of the above mentioned samples.

What is Dry Residue and Water Content?

  • Dry Residue (Solid Matter): It refers to the amount of water evaporated by heat treatment of the sludge at a certain temperature. Dry residue represents the dry matter of the sludge.
  • Water Content: This refers to the amount of free and bound water present in the sludge. This is an important factor determining the water holding capacity of the sludge and the density of the sludge.

Application Areas and Importance

  1. Sludge Management: The water content and dry residue of the sludge ensures that the sludge is disposed of properly. Sludges with high water content may require costly dehydration processes, while sludges with low water content can be more easily transported and processed.
  2. Environmental and Industrial Applications: Characterization of sludge samples plays a critical role in industrial treatment processes and wastewater treatment plants. Determining the quality of sludge is essential for the protection of water resources and environmental sustainability.
  3. Waste Water Treatment: EN 12880 is required for the proper management and disposal of sewage sludge. This analysis accurately determines the water content and solids content of sludge, which allows treatment processes to be improved and costs reduced.
  4. Sludge Recovery: Drying sludges and removing the water they contain is an important step for sludge recovery. These processes are necessary to ensure that the sludge can be properly utilized and its environmental impact minimized.
