Food Labeling: New Regulations on Consumer Safety and Transparency

New Era in Food Labeling Regulations: Consumer Safety and Transparency at the Forefront

Food Labeling Guide

The new Labeling Guide aims to maximize consumer safety and transparency by providing an updated and comprehensive approach to food labeling and information. It is an important resource to prevent misleading statements and introduces new regulations to the sector. However, compared to the previous Guidelines, there are some important differences and innovations.

In the new guide, the content of the topics has been better organized, while the examples have been increased and clarifications in the applications have been eliminated.

The most notable updates are;

Mandatory Nutrition Notification: Accurate and Clear Disclosure

Mandatory Nutrition Disclosure: The new Labeling Guidelines clearly define the content of the nutrition table and the mandatory elements. This information ensures accurate labeling of nutrients such as energy, fat, sugar and protein. The previous Guidance took a more flexible approach and did not require some items to be included on labels.

Sensitization on Nutrition Choices

The new Labeling Guideline 2024 introduces stricter rules on the labeling of vegan and vegetarian products. Whereas in the previous guidance, statements such as “Suitable for vegetarians/vegans ” were commonly used, now such statements are not allowed, nor are any images or expressions of animal products. In addition, the use of phrases such as “tastes like meat” is prohibited. These changes aim to ensure accurate labeling of products, ensure consumer safety and prevent misleading perceptions.

Food Labeling and Promotion: Both guidelines emphasize the need to prevent misleading labeling. However, the New Labeling Guideline tries to prevent consumers from getting misleading impressions by introducing stricter rules on the use of additives such as flavors. The previous Guidance provided more general guidelines.

Adaptation to the Digital Age

The use of digital information tools such as QR codes is encouraged in the Labeling Guidelines 2024. This offers an advantage in terms of providing consumers with easier access and information.
