Glutaraldehyde, which is used in biocidal products and has an approved sterilization effect, is active in both acid and basic media.
Alkaline activated 2% glutaraldehyde solution shows sporosidal effect. With the contact of the glutaraldehyde for 30-60 minutes, disinfection, 4-10 hours of contact, chemical sterilization process takes place. The duration of action of glutaraldehyde, which is activated with alkali, is between 14-28 days.
Glutaraldehyde has a strong sterilization effect. However, it is harmful to use more than 2% due to its moderately toxic and irritant effect. For people in the same environment, environments used with glutaraldehyde must have a good ventilation system. Direct eye contact or inhalation of its vapors may cause adverse consequences. In case of residue on medical instruments, tongue swelling and bloody diarrhea may occur in patients. Therefore, if it is used in instruments, it should be washed with distilled water.
Determination of glutaraldehyde in biocidal products is accepted as an important parameter in order to ensure correct sterilization and to take precautions against the dangers in question.
